Week 6, Tuesday
What is the Church doing today that is carrying the Church forward? Many advocate the need for the Church to return to its form as the Early Church, when it was pure. The only problem is that the Church was not any more pure back then than it is now. The Christians in that time did their best to serve Jesus in their cultural contexts as we do today in ours. There is nothing all too great about the early Church as Paul explains in his letter to the Corinthians. But others will argue that it is the Church of Acts 2 that should be re-immulated today. So do we begin baptizing people naked? Do we meet in the upper rooms of Jewish synagogues? There are wonderful principles in the scriptures concerning the early Church which should be immulated in today’s Church, but culture is different and so some things are dropped because they are no longer relevant. If we were to be consistent in making today’s Church look exactly like the Early Church of Acts then, in ordre to be consistent in our literal interpretation of Christian living, we must also take this approach to the rest of Scripture which will show itself to be very silly indeed. Principles are powerful because they can apply to any time and culture.
