Is it wrong that I get the same goosebumps while watching a rated R movie that I do during a worship service? Many underestimate the power and teaching of a single movie, painting, or anything that can teach about who God is and who we are as humans in relation to God. But pastors scoff at such a notion. A rated R movie, what good teaching can be found in violence, gore, sexuality, and everything else that provokes an R rating? If these people wish to avoid becoming hypocrites, their consistency in avoiding anything R rated would result in ripping many pages out of the Bible because many of its stories would easily obtain R ratings. It in such stories that God’s qualities are even more aparent, and the human need for God’s intervening and grace all the more aparent as well. Let us cast off all descriptions and prescriptions on what a worship service “ought” to be and let other modes of expressing God’s goodness to replace that which is expressing man’s narcissism.
